Formed at the University of Birmingham and anchored at University College Dublin since 1968, Howard Brian Clarke is one of the foremost medievalists of the British Isles. As architect of the Irish Historic Towns Atlas — thirty-two fascicles mapping the urban history of Ireland across a millennium — and honorary member of the International Commission for the History of Towns, he has made the study of medieval cities a European conversation.
